At the tender age of 17, Julian started his first business, landscape gardening, in the suburbs of North London. Although successful, an accident led to a change of career so, in 1979, he started a food distribution business. With zero capital but with much hard work and strong determination to succeed, the business was built, as Julian himself says, ‘brick by brick and by learning through snakes and ladders.’ With no formal training in running a business, Julian decided to take the Cranfield University Business Growth programme which helped him grow the business until it employed 75 people and achieved a £25 million turnover.
The Business Growth Programme additionally resulted in Julian becoming an unpaid mentor and advisor to several businesses in his local community. “I have a real passion for helping small businesses grow so, at the time, I instinctively found myself assisting, nurturing and advising both start ups and business owners.“
More than a few years on, and with a wealth of business experience under his belt, Julian decided to make a career out of offering this support by becoming part of the Business Doctors’ professional team. Julian knows all too well that many owners will need his help as their company grows. He works with them to design more efficient systems, resolve supplier issues, introduce new operations, manage logistics, identify the best marketing methods, increase sales or solve staffing problems. Julian is also able to offer sound advice on the lifestyle changing process of selling a successful business at the highest possible price.
“I want to help, guide and assist SME owners looking to grow their businesses, share with them the sense of achievement that arises from successful expansion and relieve some of the pain that all owners encounter at some point. With 40 years experience of managing my own business, there are not many ailments I’ve not fixed before. I use the tried and tested tools provided by Business Doctors to help owners, analyse, address and resolve their issues. Additionally I have over 50 other Business Doctors, each with his or her consultant background, to call on for specialist advice.”
