Maintaining motivation as we head into spring
by Sandra Murphy Feb 08 2017
You probably spent the latter part of December talking, eating, drinking and hopefully relaxing with loved ones. And it’s likely that one frequent topic of conversation was “what are your New Year’s resolutions?” If you're anything like me, when you made those well intended statements of what you’re going to do differently, you genuinely meant it.
Then January comes and goes, and you return to working reality and all too soon you’re right back doing what you always did in the way you’ve always done it.
It doesn’t always have to be the same old process
Part of my work as a Business Doctor involves running business seminars. Me, at the front of the room, microphone in hand so everyone can hear me. And it is really important people can hear me, because I talk a lot of sense. But it’s also important they can see me - because I believe I’m great.
Not in a “wow, that’s an amazing outfit/hairstyle/body” sort of great. This is a different sort of greatness. It’s a greatness that starts every morning when I’m getting ready for work; when I’m putting on a quick bit of lippy and eye liner-my uniform that says I’m ready to take on the world.
Every morning, I take a good look in the mirror, because it GIVES me a little bit of time to reflect. And here’s what my reflection is about:
G – Great
I – Improve
V – Vulnerable
E - Edge
S – So What
Your personal outlook will influence your business
My daily reflection will influence where my business will go, provide that little bit of foresight we all want to have.
If I can’t see what’s great in what I do how can I expect my clients to?
Is there really no way at all I can improve? Is there nothing else I can do to create a better experience for my clients, my staff, my suppliers?
Where am I vulnerable? Who’s catching up on me and why?
What gives me the edge? What makes me different, better, stand out from the crowd?
And the ultimate question: so what does that mean for my clients, my staff, my suppliers? What impact am I having? Why should they keep working with me? And make no mistake, if any of them are working for you but not with you it’s time to return to the G spot again.
We’re almost there. We’ve made it through January: dark, damp, cold, windy, broke January. And that’s a great feeling. As the daylight improves, our vulnerability to coughs and colds recedes and the raw edge of the cold retreats as we move towards Spring.
So make sure it stays that way. Make a resolution that every day you’re going to ask yourself these five words, that they will form the foundations of your New Year resolutions and make sure you keep the ‘So What’ thriving in your business.
